Unified Partner Athletes are individuals without intellectual and developmental disabilities who train and compete alongside Special Olympics athletes within an inclusive sports environment that promotes inclusion and equality.
To participate as a Unified Partner Athlete, the individual must not have an intellectual or developmental disability. Participation is open to various age groups, providing opportunities for individuals to support fellow athletes and promote teamwork and inclusion.
Activities that bring together Special Olympics athletes and Unified Partner Athletes are known as “Unified Sports,” an inclusive sports model that integrates athletes into unified teams competing together in shared competitions. This model can be implemented across a wide range of team and dual sports, including football, tennis, sailing, badminton, and many others.
This participation contributes to building positive relationships and strengthening the values of inclusion and mutual understanding, reflecting the mission of Special Olympics in fostering a more inclusive society.
