A Special Olympics Athlete is an individual with intellectual and developmental disabilities who is at least 8 years old and participates in accredited Special Olympics sports programs.
In accordance with Special Olympics International standards, athletes are required to complete a training program of no less than eight weeks in one of the recognized sports and participate in at least one Olympic-style com
petition that includes opening and closing ceremonies, as well as medal presentations.
This framework aims to ensure athletes’ readiness and provide them with a comprehensive sports experience that enhances their skills and supports their active participation. Athletes are at the heart of Special Olympics programs, with all activities and initiatives designed around developing their abilities and enriching their sporting experience.
