The journey of Special Olympics Saudi Arabia began in 1994 in Riyadh, serving as the official entity representing the global Special Olympics movement within the Kingdom. It was established under the leadership of Prince Faisal bin Fahd bin Abdulaziz Al Saud (may Allah have mercy upon him).
Since then, the Kingdom has maintained an active presence at regional and international events. Its first international participation took place in 1995 at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in the United States, marking the beginning of continued participation across various global competitions. This reflects the Kingdom’s enduring commitment to supporting and empowering athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
In 2019, Resolution No. 15179 issued by the President of the Saudi Olympic Committee established the Saudi Special Olympics Federation as an independent sports federation under the leadership of Reema bint Bandar Al Saud. The federation was established to develop sports and health programs for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and to strengthen the Kingdom’s presence on the international stage.
